Pregnancy- a risk for older women

Pregnancy is considered highly risky for older women, larger family, and heavier women. These factors such as age, weight, etc. can lead to multiple miscarriages, high blood pressure, carrying multiples such as twins or triplets, lupus, diabetes, and obesity and it is more common in older mothers.

Perinatologists from all around the world are helping in starting and growing families to women for whom pregnancy is considered “high risk” due to age or other factors. Woman in her late thirties or early forties is considered young by many standards but when it comes to reproduction, these women are considered high-risk. Along with the growing number of first-time "older" moms, women in their 40s having their third or fourth child are also considered at high risk.

Perinatology, also known as Maternal-fetal medicine is a specialty in medical which provides care to mother and unborn babies who are at high risk of complications. The treatment begins even before a woman becomes pregnant so to identify and prepare for complications that might occur. As a result of this When a woman becomes pregnant, there is very less number of invasive screenings to monitor the health of an unborn baby.

Fetal genetic material (DNA) can be analyzed by taking blood from a pregnant woman to detect the chromosomal abnormalities as early as 10 weeks gestation. These tests are less destructive and can be done earlier in pregnancy than the more standard amniocentesis. Apart from these tests, 3D ultrasound, and 4D ultrasound can also be done. Physicians can diagnose abnormalities in an early stage using 3D ultrasound hence allowing families to understand certain fetal irregularities in a better way. 4D ultrasound is although not necessary but it can provide a series of still images that appear as a moving video to the parents.

Maternal-fetal medicine team which includes board-certified perinatologists and neonatologists, as well as sonographers, genetic counselors and nurse educators help women in decreasing anxiety amount which comes with a high risk pregnancy. More personal care is delivered to these women.

Women must have a clear understanding of what should be done to have a healthy baby so that despite having the risk factors each woman can achieve success.

Gestation Alters Maternal Gut Microbiota

Gestation Alters Maternal Gut Microbiota Millions of bacteria are living inside and on our body weighing around four pounds of our body weight. These bacteria are very useful and important in health and in fighting disease. These microbiomes are altered during gestation . It was seen that during pregnancy microbiomes are responsible for partial weight gain and some essential inflammatory responses . But the mechanism responsible for such changes is still unknown. Several studies have been done to see the changes in bacteria with progression in pregnancy . Recently in one of the studies, it was found that during pregnancy progesterone regulates the microbial composition of bacteria in such a way that may help the baby develop. It was found that as the pregnancy progressed there was a dramatic change in the composition of bacteria mostly during late pregnancy along with the increase in the relative abundance of Bifidobacterium . These bacteria metabolize the...
